Apple’s App Store is an amazing platform for the iPhone and iPad, but as with most things Apple, it has a few quirks. When you want to download an app, for example, you don’t always know what to search for – and what you’re searching for – and that’s where AppSearch comes in. AppSearch allows you to enter a developer or package name and search for that item or package within the App Store and iBooks.
There’s a whole lot of buzz around the iOS App Store lately. Every week there’s a new and exciting new app to play with, and it can be hard to keep track of all of them. You can’t just walk into an App Store and download an app, because you’re limited to the number of apps you can purchase in a given period of time. Even if you wanted to download a ton of apps, that isn’t an option with the App Store.
Nowadays, most mobile apps are distributed through the Apple App Store. However, there are quite a few of us that prefer to use the old-fashioned way: downloading them directly from the developer’s website. However, this can be a tedious and time-consuming process. That’s where the app store command-line tool comes in handy.
ipatool is a command-line tool that lets you search the App Store for iOS applications and download a copy of the app package, also known as an ipa file.
- macOS 10.15 or later is required.
- To utilize the App Store, you’ll need an Apple ID.
GitHub releases has the most recent version of ipatool.
Homebrew may be used to install ipatool.

Note: When running the tool, you may provide the Apple ID email address and username as arguments or configure them as environment variables (IPATOOL EMAIL and IPATOOL PASSWORD). If none of those techniques is used to provide this information, the program will ask for user input in an interactive session. Similarly, you may provide the 2FA code interactively or through the IPATOOL 2FA CODE environment variable.
This is common knowledge.
Is it safe to keep my Apple ID credentials?
Your credentials are never stored in the program, and it only interacts with Apple servers directly. Please feel free to go through the source code.
Will this tool cause my Apple ID to be flagged?
Maybe, but most likely not. I cannot guarantee the safety of this program since it interacts directly with iTunes and the App Store, imitating the behavior of iTunes on macOS. I suggest creating a disposable Apple ID. At your own peril, use this tool.
Is it possible to utilize this technique to get paid applications without paying for them?
No. You may only download applications that you have already installed on your iOS device; this is not a pirate tool. This restriction also applies to free applications. Essentially, the program you’re attempting to download must already have a license associated with your account.
Is it possible to use this program on Apple Silicon Macs to sideload unsupported iOS apps?
While it was formerly possible to use this program to download and install ipa files on Macs running Apple Silicon, this is no longer the true. For the software package, Apple has ceased providing macOS compatible sinf data. You could, however, use this technique to get a copy of the iOS software, then use a jailbroken iOS device to remove any codesigning restrictions before re-codesigning the program with an adhoc signature to operate on Apple Silicon.
The nice thing about iOS is that it offers a very simple mechanism to download and manage apps: the App Store. But there is currently a problem with downloading apps to you iOS device: you can’t directly download a whole package, only a single app. This means you have to install the app first and then download the whole package. We’ve found a neat solution to this problem: a command-line tool that allows you to download all the apps and app packages you need as a single package..
