ATX is a motherboard form factor that has been the standard for computer cases since its introduction in 1997. It’s also called an Advanced Technology Extended (ATX) format, and it’s used by most PC manufacturers today.

ATX is the acronym for Advanced Technology Extended. It is a motherboard form factor, which is typically used for high-end desktops and workstations. Micro ATX is a motherboard form factor that was introduced in 2002. Mini ATX is a smaller version of the standard size that was introduced in 2003.

It’s easy to be intimidated by the prospect of building a computer. It’s a big job to choose components, purchase them, put them all together in a case, and then install the operating system. It may be difficult to concentrate on specific chores when there are so many on the list.

We’re talking about your motherboard, or more specifically, the kind of motherboard you should choose. We’ll compare ATX, Micro ATX, and Mini ATX motherboards in this post so you can figure out which is ideal for you.

The major differences between ATX, Micro ATX, and Mini ATX motherboards are shown here.

Size

The size disparity between the three is the most apparent. ATX motherboards are the biggest of the three, measuring 12′′ x 9.6′′ on average. Micro ATXs are square and measure 9.6′′ x 9.6′′, while Mini ATXs are the tiniest of the group, at just 6.7′′ x 6.7′′.

RAM Slots

ATX motherboards feature the most RAM slots and can accommodate larger RAM in general. This is due to their apparent physical superiority. The majority of ATX motherboards feature four RAM slots, while mini ATX motherboards only have two. A Mini ATX motherboard may have two or even one RAM slot.

Slots for PCIe

Because of their bigger size, ATX motherboards won this round once again. An ATX motherboard will often have more PCIe slots than a tiny or small ATX motherboard, which will frequently have the same amount.

The most RAM slots and PCIe lanes are found on ATX motherboards.

If you’re constructing a gaming PC, you won’t need as many slots, but ATX motherboards are a superior option for multi-GPU configurations.

Price

ATX motherboards are more expensive than micro or small ATX motherboards. The price rise is reasonable given that they are larger motherboards with more RAM and PCIe slots, as well as additional functionality.

Features

Most ATX motherboards will have sophisticated features like RGB lighting, compatibility for aftermarket liquid cooling, and perhaps 5.1 or 7.1 audio connectors out of the box.

These capabilities aren’t always accessible on Mini or Micro ATX keyboards, but they’re generally not available on the smaller ones.

Here are some advantages and disadvantages for each motherboard model.

Type Pros Cons
ATX It’s better for long-term use. More RAM slots are needed. More PCIe lanes are needed. Maximum RAM capacity. Overclocking is a better option. Expensive Smaller cases will not fit.
Micro ATX The cheapest option. For single-GPU builds, this is a better option. It’s simple to stuff into cases. Advanced features, such as RGB, are usually missing. There isn’t as much RAM available. There isn’t a lot of room for improvement.
Mini ATX Smaller cases are easier to fit. Improved aesthetics. There are usually just two RAM slots on a computer. It’s pricier than Micro ATX. Multi-GPU apps will not function.

The motherboard you choose will ultimately be determined by how long you intend to use your computer, how many updates you plan to make, what features you need, and how much you’re prepared to pay.

An ATX motherboard is your best option if you’re wanting to create a long-term PC that you’ll be updating as you go. It’ll offer you the greatest lifespan and flexibility when it comes to upgrades.

Mini ATX and Micro ATX motherboards, on the other hand, will save you a lot of money if you’re seeking to create a cheap PC that you don’t expect to update much or if you plan on creating a whole new PC. Furthermore, if you like small PCs, these two are your only choices.

The how could you tell whether a system was regular atx, microatx, or mini-itx? is a question that has been asked before. There are 3 different types of motherboards that can be found in computers and they are ATX, Micro ATX, and Mini ITX.
